\n Is drifting on the Marmara Sea tonight.<\/span>
\n It is dancing with the lively fish,<\/span>
\n Singing praises of love!<\/span><\/p>\n

On the opposite shore<\/span>
\n I am subject to solitude.<\/span>
\n With yesterday\u2019s thoughts and feelings<\/span>
\n Only adding to my sorrow and confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This evening, which took shape before my eyes<\/span>
\n and captivated me, is exhausted.<\/span>
\n My heart is pierced by the wild feelings<\/span>
\n Newly born within me tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tonight\u2026<\/span>
\n The moon-like siren at Ayvalik<\/span>
\n Is singing on the Marmara Sea,<\/span>
\n Urging me forward towards her.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2026<\/span>
\n From the closest shore to you<\/span>
\n Cannot wait until you come,<\/span>
\n So I catch your shadow and make a boat,<\/span>
\n Wishing to set a-sail.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2026<\/span>

\n Carve you<\/span>
\n Onto my parched heart,<\/span>
\n burning like fire in the Teklimakan.2<\/span><\/p>\n

\n A warship between the darkened clouds.<\/span>

\n Did you recognise the people from Ayk\u00f6l?<\/span>
\n Was darkness enshrouding Aydingk\u00f6l?9<\/span>
\n Were the dogs barking in Aqsu?10<\/span>
\n When young men became martyrs in L\u00fckch\u00fcn,11<\/span>
\n When vultures filled the evening skies of Yilqa,12<\/span>
\n Were the doe which disappeared from Maralb\u00e9shi,13<\/span>
\n Crying by the Tarim River?14<\/span><\/p>\n

Full moon over Ayvalik,<\/span>
\n Did you recognise on your trip today;<\/span>
\n The people, who love the crescent moon and stars,<\/span>
\n Who say: \u201cWe are not a white flag\u201d?<\/span>
\n Those who believe in Khan Tengri,15 which every evening<\/span>
\n lays out like a white carpet onto your path?<\/span>
\n And the Teklimakan,<\/span>
\n A mystical place with an ocean of sand,<\/span>
\n Capturing precisely your own reflected shape?<\/span><\/p>\n

Since I have gone through so much<\/span>
\n My feelings are rushed,<\/span>
\n Moving in every direction.<\/span>
\n The early arrival of God\u2019s light<\/span>
\n Adds sorrow to my peaceful heart.<\/span>
\n It wishes to steal it away,<\/span>
\n so drags the full moon over Ayvalik<\/span>
\n away to the west!<\/span><\/p>\n

Life continues as normal in the streets of Ayvalik,<\/span>
\n The sound of Adhan16 in the loudspeakers,<\/span>
\n Calling us to the morning prayer\u2026<\/span>
\n In the amusement arcades on the seafront<\/span>
\n Foreign music is playing.<\/span>
\n The barking of dogs,<\/span>
\n The clucking of hens,<\/span>
\n Sweethearts on the street corner being driven away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Full moon over Ayvalik,<\/span>
\n I am an artist tonight<\/span>
\n So I shall paint on my heart<\/span>
\n The shadows on the Marmara Sea.<\/span>
\n My pen has drawn a chain to tie you to the ocean,<\/span>
\n Yet the ink became blood and I scribbled you out,<\/span>
\n Staining your face!<\/span><\/p>\n

O, Moon\u2026<\/span>
\n If you leave at this very moment,<\/span>
\n Then I beg from you on your return<\/span>
\n When you see the Teklimakan,<\/span>
\n When you kiss the Tengri Mountains,<\/span>
\n To bring greetings from your slave who loves you,<\/span>
\n From this exiled Uyghur,<\/span>
\n From Ayvalik!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n I was waiting for you in Ayvalik,<\/span>

7. The \u2018Six Oasis Cities\u2019 (Uyghur: \u0626\u0627\u0644\u062a\u06d5 \u0634\u06d5\u06be\u06d5\u0631 ) is a traditional name for the major oases towns of the region, namely: Khotan, Yarkand, Kashgar, \u00dcch-Turpan, Yengisar, and Aqsu.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

8. Turkestan is a Persian word, literally meaning \u2018Place of the Turks\u2019. It refers to the cultural and linguistic sphere of the Turks, used generally to define the region of modern-day Turkic Central Asia.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

14. The Tarim River (Uyghur: \u062a\u0627\u0631\u0649\u0645 \u062f\u06d5\u0631\u064a\u0627\u0633\u0649 ) is the main river of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The name Tengri refers to a deity in Old Turkic and Mongolic belief, literally meaning \u2018sky\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
